A CPhA On-Demand Webinar
The ACC/AHA Blood Cholesterol Guidelines published in late 2013 represented a significant departure from previous recommendations on treatment of dyslipidemia. These guidelines emphasized identifying patients at high risk of cardiovascular disease and starting appropriately intensive statins to improve outcomes. Unfortunately, the ACC/AHA recommendations were quickly found to lack sufficient guidance to effectively manage patients once they were already on statin therapy. Specifically, the omission of established lipoprotein goals made individualization impossible, especially in elderly patients. To rectify this and other omissions, the National Lipid Association (NLA) developed comprehensive recommendations to bridge the gap. This presentation will compare and contrast the current cholesterol guidelines and evaluate the evidence supporting drug therapy recommendations to treat dyslipidemia in older adults.
At the completion of this webinar, participants should be able to:
- Compare and contrast current cholesterol guidelines from ACC/AHA and NLA.
- Select appropriate treatment goals for older adults with dyslipidemia.
- Discuss the limitations and potential controversies with current drug therapy options for treatment of dyslipidemia in the older adult.
- Evaluate the potential role of emerging and recently approved drug therapies as part of optimal therapeutic regimens for elderly patients.
