Pharmacogenomics: The Time is Now!

We are at a pivotal moment in pharmacy practice where specific gene variations have been associated with differences in drug response, an individual’s propensity for developing certain drug side effects, and variation in the rate and extent of drug metabolism.  The intent of this presentation is to prepare pharmacists for our eventual role of translating gene-drug associations into clinical practice.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Gain a basic understanding of the interplay between the human genome and the science of pharmacology
  • Identify clinically actionable gene-drug associations and review fundamental pharmacogenomic (PGx) concepts and nomenclature
  • Consult The Pharmacogenomic Knowledge Base and the FDA Table of Pharmacogenomic Biomarkers in order to personalize patient drug therapy and answer provider questions

  • Kathleen Orrico, PharmD, BCPS, UCSF School of Pharmacy
