New Drug Approvals – 2017 & 2018


Pharmacists must remain up-to-date on all new drug approvals and withdrawals each year. Many unique and important medications were approved in 2017 and more are expected in 2018. This module will describe newly approved agents in several therapeutic categories. Focus will be given to the most common drugs that pharmacists are likely to encounter in practice. The indications, dosing guidelines, adverse effects, and safety information will be discussed. Changes to existing drug formulations, indications, and labeling, as well as laws and regulations affecting patient care and pharmacy practice, will also be presented.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize indications, pharmacology, safety recommendations, and dosing guidelines for new drugs approved by the FDA in 2017 and 2018
  • Identify generic and brand names of newly approved drugs
  • Explain changes to formulations and labeling of existing drugs
  • Compare new drugs to older therapeutic agents and discuss the role of newly approved drugs in daily pharmacy practice and patient care
  • Understand information about new drugs that should be communicated to patients
