Each year, new products are introduced to the market as over-the-counter agents for the management of a variety of common ailments. With the significant number of products available, patients and health care providers alike can become overwhelmed. Pharmacists provide a unique expertise in this area and aid others in identifying products best suited to meet their needs. This program aims to provide important updates on recent developments related to the introduction of new products to market as well as addressing new clinical recommendations and warnings associated with over-the-counter product use.
At the completion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Summarize the over-the-counter drug approval process and prescription to over-the-counter designation process
- Recall new products that were granted over-the-counter status during 2016 and 2017 year
- Compare and contrast new and existing over-the-counter products of the same class and/or indications
- Provide self-care recommendations and education to patients based on new clinical evidence and recommendations

The California Pharmacists Association (#0113) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
