APhA’s Pharmacy-Based Travel Health Services – Hosted by California Pharmacists Association
APhA’s Pharmacy-Based Travel Health Services (2nd Edition) is an innovative and interactive advanced competency training (ACT) program that explores the pharmacist’s role in providing travel health services to patients. This application-based activity is the first step for pharmacists interested in learning the essential skills necessary to successfully provide travel health services.
Program pre-requisite: Pharmacists who have completed the APhA Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery certificate training program and received a Certificate of Achievement or have previously completed an immunization training program and are authorized to provide immunizations in the state in which they practice.

How to Register & What to Expect

Step 4: Access your home study materials and complete ALL required items BEFORE the live training program
Step 5: Attend the live training program & receive instructions on accessing the final exam
Step 6: Complete/pass the final exam within one week of the live training program to receive your certificate

Registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferrable under any circumstances. Please be advised that this program is subject to postponement or cancellation if the required minimum number of registrants is not met at least 10 days prior to the program. If class is cancelled, CPhA will automatically transfer your registration fee to a future CPhA hosted APhA Travel Health Services certificate training class.
Program Goals
The goals of this program are to:
- Provide pharmacists with comprehensive knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to establish and deliver a successful travel health service.
- Teach pharmacists to identify at-risk patient populations in need of preventative and travel care.
- Enhance pharmacists’ ability to effectively counsel patients on travel health.
- Motivate increased numbers of pharmacists to establish travel health services
There are two components to the California specific Pharmacy-Based Travel Health Services advanced competency training (ACT) program:
- 6.0 hour (0.60 CEU) web based self-study modules with case studies and assessment exam
- 4.0 hour (0.40 CEU) live seminar with assessment exam
Live Seminar Learning Objectives
After completing the live seminar, pharmacists will be able to:
- Distinguish the information necessary to obtain from patients to conduct a quality travel health risk assessment.
- Explain elements of a pre-travel consultation in the community pharmacy setting.
- Demonstrate appropriate health risk communication and management for international travelers.
- Select appropriate vaccinations to prevent diseases associated with travel to certain geographic regions.
- Select appropriate prescription, over-the-counter, and ancillary prophylactic and therapeutic products related to travel health.

Program Completion Requirements
To earn Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE) Credit and/or a Certificate of Completion, participants must meet all the following requirements:
- Complete Pre-Test
- Complete the self-study modules and successfully complete the online self-study assessment. A score of 70% or better is required.
- Attend a live training seminar offering and successfully complete the online open-book final exam and evaluation. A score of 70% or better is required.
Once credit is claimed, Transcripts of CPE will be available online within 24 hours on the participant’s CPE Monitor profile at www.nabp.net. The Certificate of Achievement will be available online upon successful completion of the activity requirements. This will be made available on the participant’s “My Training” page on www.pharmacist.com.
Continuing Pharmacy Education (CPE) Information
Release Date: January 1, 2021
Expiration Date: January 1, 2024 – PLEASE NOTE: NO Home Study credit granted after this date; Live Credit can only be granted within 60 days from the day of the seminar attended.
Activity Type: Application-Based
Target Audience: Pharmacists who have completed the APhA Pharmacy-Based ImmunizationDelivery certificate training program and received a Certificate of Achievement or have previously completed an immunization training program and are authorized to provide immunizations in the state in which they practice.
Learning Level: 3 – Substantial knowledge of and experience in the subject area of immunization is required, no prior knowledge in travel health is required.
The self-study learning portion of the Pharmacy-Based Travel Health Services advanced competency training program is approved for 6 hours (0.60 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit (ACPE UAN 0202-0000-19-146-L01-P / 0202-9999-19-146-L01-P). The live training seminar is approved for 4 hours (0.40 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit (ACPE UAN 0202-0000-19-146-L01-P / 0202-9999-19-146-L01-P).

Course material and exams will be accessed online – In order to participate in this activity, registrants must have access to a computer with minimum system requirements: Internet connectivity with current version of internet browsers, such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer (V8 and above); Adobe Acrobat Reader, Flash Player 8 or higher, Windows 95, Pentium 3 or equivalent processor, 64 MB of free memory (not 64 MB total), and Audio: Sound card and speakers or earphones. APhA’s learning activities are designed with multimedia which is best experienced while using a PC or Mac that is equipped with the hardware and software components described above. Although activities may also be viewed using portable devices, it is not recommended.
